On June 18, organizations from all around the world participate in a variety of events to mark Autistic Pride Day. The purpose of this day is to increase awareness among those who do not have autism spectrum disorder so they do not view autistic people as individuals who need to be treated but rather as unique beings.

In 2005, Aspies for Freedom held the first celebration of Autistic Pride Day, modeling it after the gay pride movement. The fact that the event is managed by autistic individuals themselves rather than by nonprofit organizations is one of its most noteworthy features. Since its inception, Autistic Pride Day has been a celebration of the autistic community rather than a day for other organizations to gain attention by suppressing autistic individuals.
