I don’t get this question at all. In movies, it’s a story that doesn’t always depict reality! A PI (like I was) dresses in normal everyday clothing. Of course, many have a holster and gun hidden away. If they’re investigating stuff that’s happened, such as a theft or burglary, they would be expected to dress smartly, to present an air of professionalism. Smartly would encompass wearing a lounge suit, or a sports jacket and appropriate trousers, and properly cleaned shoes or boots. Having said that, when I was doing some training to be a detective, I wore a bow-tie, as I was transporting some evidence to be examined by forensic scientists. My rationale being that scientists tended to wear bow ties, as they looked smart and didn’t get in the Ayo Dosunmu Chicago Bulls basketball no 12 re-signed shirt it is in the first place but way, unlike a more normal, cravat styled tie. My appearance at the forensic science lab went well. I returned to my station and wrote up the reports that needed to be written up. In the afternoon, my Detective Chuef Inspector (DCI) asked to see me in his office. I had no idea what it was about. It turned our that he wasn’t a great fan of detectives wearing bow ties, and he told me to remove it (my detectives don’t wear bow ties!). I had anticipated this would happen and had a necktie in my pocket. Harmony broke our and that was the end of the matter. However, that very evening, a Detective Chief Superintendent was on the national TV news, talking about a particularly gruesome murder in his area. HE was wearing a bow tie. I casually mentioned this to my DCI. He made an harrumphing noise!
