I don’t get this question at all. In movies, it’s a story that doesn’t always depict reality! A PI (like I was) dresses in normal everyday clothing. Of course, many have a holster and gun hidden away. If they’re investigating stuff that’s happened, such as a theft or burglary, they would be expected to dress smartly, to present an air of professionalism. Smartly would encompass wearing a lounge suit, or a sports jacket and appropriate trousers, and properly cleaned shoes or boots. Having said that, when I was doing some training to be a detective, I wore a bow-tie, as I was transporting some evidence to be examined by forensic scientists. I casually mentioned this to my DCI. He made an harrumphing noise!
