Quite simply that is Hollywood filling people’s brains with complete and utter garbage. When working as an investigator I often wore a polo shirt with a department logo clearly embroidered on it with cargo style khakis or perhaps a shirt and tie if I were headed to court (ties tend to present a little bit of a safety concern in the Brooklyn Royal Giants 1912 baseball cross bats shirt but in fact I love this field.) I kept a jumpsuit in my trunk in case things were messy. I had a rain coat or ‘trench coat as they were referred to back in that era, in there as well for rainy days. But I definitely didn’t wear it often. The idea is to present a professional image. Back in the 50s when the Hollywood detective image was ingrained in the American Psyche ‘professional’ was shirt, tie and jacket. They used trench coats to help disguise their side arms and even they didn’t wear them all the time. Only when they were higher profile, ie tended to attract media presence based on the cases they were working on.
