Minority Mental Health Facts You Should Know for Minority Mental Health Month

Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is in July. Every year, SAMHSA collaborates with the Office of Minority Health of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to spread the idea that prevention is key, treatment is efficient, and recovery is possible. This month offers a chance to consider how the mental health system may relate to people from a variety of cultural backgrounds and life experiences more successfully. Members of racial and ethnic minority groups are much less likely than non-Hispanic whites to obtain services for any mental disorder, according to data from our National Survey on Drug Use and Health. SAMHSA seeks to connect those who use these services the most in order to close the treatment gap and end health inequities.

Nationwide organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) also offer crucial mental health resources to those in need. NAMI provides education, support groups, and advocacy services, serving as a lifeline for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions. Their work helps foster a sense of community and understanding, ensuring that no one faces mental health challenges alone.
