If you will be in a very cold location get appropriate base layers. I cannot stress that enough. I have a friend who went cross country skiing in the I don’t care about your pronouns shirt in contrast I will get this arctic circle in December a few years ago. She made an effort to have wool base layers, warm socks, insulated boots, gloves and mittens, a balaclava, and a proper parka that was rated for the temperatures she would be in. She also rented proper ski pants. She was warm and comfortable during her excursions and her trip. I have another friend who went to the Bahamas and spent her time in flip flops and a swimsuit. Had they traded attire for their respective locations neither would have been comfortable. I live in a relatively moderate climate. It gets chilly during winter, more as a result of the wind off of the ocean. To be comfortable here in winter I often wear multiple thinner layers, and add or subtract as the need arises. One often does need a hat or scarf to feel cozy. However, I would be very uncomfortable in heavier gear intended for snowy regions, or dressed for tropical weather.
