Having a field that grapples professionally with fundamental questions about what is true or not and about what is valuable is valuable. And it is valuable precisely because philosophers are able to give clarity and precision to issues which plague us as humans. Many people think that philosophical thought is pointless just because it cannot give us definitive unquestionable answers to these questions. What most people don’t realize is that most other forms of thought also can’t give definitive unquestionable answers. The difference between philosophy and those other disciplines is that philosophy doesn’t even pretend that they can reach such heights.
