In the OR, these urinary catheters are not placed until the patient is asleep – thankfully – because most men cringe when the nurse mentions that it will be “there”, when they wake up. It’s a special skill to place these catheters around enlarged prostates, and I know by looking at patient histories and co-morbidities which guys will need the special catheters and techniques. I NEVER tell them – their discomfort or embarrassment would make us all uncomfortable.
