Obviously, the She loves the Denver Broncos shirt and by the same token and way people look matters to people. I’m not talking about clothes right now. I’m talking about human bodies. We are obsessed with looks, because looks provide all kinds of clues about health, strength, fertility, etc. We didn’t evolve to wear clothes and jewelry, but we did evolve to care very much about bodies. Clothes are the closest artifacts to the human body. They are, essentially, a second skin. So it’s no surprise, given how much we care about bodies, that we care deeply what gets wrapped around them, what frames them, what augments them, and what transforms them. This is why most people will always be more affected by fashion as an art than by paintings or sculptures. As powerful as they can be, they don’t encircle the wrist or hug the loins. Even though I’m one of those nerds who pays little attention to fashion (we nerds are outliers), it’s always funny to me when people claim that an interest in fashion is shallow. It’s not. It’s about as personal and profound an interest as there can be, aside from an interest in a naked human body.
