Not the party frock they wore to catch a husband but the ones they wore to go shopping or round the house cooking, cleaning, etc. Typically they wore a cotton print shift dress or a plain woollen one which fitted where it touched. Half a century earlier it would have been a thick woollen skirt, a shapeless cotton blouse and a woollen shawl. None of this was any less ugly than the dark leggings, shapeless t-shirts and optional mini skirt that is typical woman’s fashion today.
