World Population Day was created in 1989 by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme as a result of the Day of Five Billion, which was celebrated on July 11, 1987. The United Nations General Assembly voted to continue observing World Population Day in 1990 through Resolution 45/216 in order to increase public awareness of population issues and how they relate to the environment and development.

The United Nations claims that population trends are on the rise and that these patterns have an impact on social safeguards, employment, income distribution, and economic growth. They also have an impact on initiatives to guarantee that everyone has access to energy, water, food, housing, sanitation, and health care. Policymakers need to know how many people are now on the world, where they are, how old they are, and how many will be born after them in order to handle individual needs more sustainably.
